If you're taking the LDS-pill I humbly recommend Under the Banner of Heaven. It's a good survey of the history you summarize above plus a bit of modern day anthropology about splinter fundamentalist Mormon groups with a gripping true crime story at its center. Very much enjoyed it. Krakauer spins a good yarn.
