A nexus of three things have aligned:
A late-stage ADHD diagnosis which has prompted me consider my relationship with concentration
The realisation that, for someone who wants to write short fiction, I don’t read nearly enough short fiction.
A desire to get better at reading aloud.
To combat all three — I decided it’d be cool to do daily live readings of short stories, flash fiction or essays. I wanted to start with my favourites and once I get more comfortable, I can start reading recommendations, or things that I’m a little less familiar with.
Today’s live was impromptu and uncomfortable but we all know perfect is the enemy of good! I’m hoping the process of posting publicly will provide me some external pressure of accountability that will urge this whole thing into being regular.
My first reading: Yuri Herrara’s The Science of Extinction from his 2023 short fiction collection, Ten Planets.
Feel free to send your recommendations of short fiction, essays or flash fiction of what might like to hear me read!
