"at a certain point, we gotta consider whether it is strategically expedient to whip off our shirts, reveal we’ve painted our naked bodies white, black, green and red and yell, “free, free palestine!” sometimes you gotta understand you’re in handcuffs and smile with the hairpin behind your teeth."

oh, my god, the mental image this conjured!

Not to mention he outrightly called annoying orange a fascist and has been very outspoken about not giving 🧊 a free reign, which is the exact opposite of the terrorizing ny’s current gov is doing

This question is a sort of password though. It is obviously nonsensical in the sense that the single biggest threat to Israel’s continued existence seems to be Israel itself, and definitely not the mayor of NYC. The question is code for ‘are you going to support our project of global political and military domination, where anyone we mark as ‘enemy’ is eligible for destruction without question, and anyone we deem ‘friend’ is allowed to murder with impunity.’

Mamdani being Muslim, it’s extra important for them to get him to label himself as ‘one of the good ones’, ‘a pro-white Muslim’, etc etc. If he didn’t pay lip service to this they would have fought him a hundred times harder than they already fought him.

This is the predicament any semi-decent person running for office suffers. The Gatekeepers would prefer you with no morality at all - nimble at glib talk that appeases the masses, yet willing to sell out any idea as and when necessary. So to get in, you have to somewhat camouflage as one of them.

The issue, of course, comes as the pressures begin to mount. Oh, you want us to let you fight for free bus transport in your city? Sure, we can do that. But first you openly say the US army is saving the world from Radical Islam. Oh, that makes you uncomfortable? Well, sure would be a shame if your political career ended before it started, and you never got to implement all those cool ideas to help your city…..’

‘Pick your battles’ often slips into forgetting what those battles even were. Look at AOC now, railing with Bernie against ‘billionaires’ while lowkey justifying genocide.

100% agree. It's why I'm such a staunch believer of trying to win the battle on multiple fronts. I also think there needs to be some material concrete goals to work towards that can go beyond sloganeering because then we can actually see how career politicians are useful beyond the nebulous way we currently frame these battles.

For instance, the usefulness of Bernie should he had risen to the presidency would've been that he was anti-billionaire and pro-healthcare. He still would've been president of America. There is no "going to brunch" until we get those things.

AOC is the same. We understand that holding office comes with capitulation. Okay. Now what do we do? There are ways outside of electoral politics to affect change -- the right do it all the time. How do we actually do it?

Yes, absolutely. Like there would still be value to a person who would introduce genuine free healthcare and some control over corporate interests even if he weren’t all the way progressive on everything else. And doubly so with a city mayor who, like, objectively has zero influence on foreign policy. We need to let go of the idea of The Perfect Leader, especially in the context of most people who actually really tried to shake things up having a tendency of waking up dead.

israel already exists. it is a nation protected by law AND the UN.

the better question is DO THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO EXIST.

im paraphrasing a more intelligent person but the point is fucking innarguable.

i promise i am not being snarky when i say that your use of exclusively lower case letters is very calming.

also, any alleged “leftist” who still pretends that “protest voting” over israel is valid is actually just three libertarians in a trench coat. or a tankie. either way they belong at the back of the horseshoe with the other déplorables.

Nothing positive can happen within the electoral system. This man offers you nothing. It's a waste of your energy even paying attention to this. This is shown over and over again and yet here we are.
