Last year, I applied for my dream writing job as a critic for a food review website (I am a man of many side-quests).
I’d applied for the same position four times before and never got as much as an email back.
Something was in the air this time, I was locked in on an astral level. I made it through a rigorous five-step application process where I had to charm my way through a number of interviews and provide various writing samples (side note: I think its a pretty poor form for a company to ask for multiple original writing samples before they’ve hired you, talk about exploiting your labour before you’ve even walked through the door) and after parrying and tackling everything they threw at me, I was rejected from the role.
A heartbreaking ordeal, to be honest.
I don’t think I’ve ever had to put so much sustained effort into a single job interview before and it would’ve dramatically changed my life.
That being said: I’d totally forgot about the review I wrote as a sample and I would hate for it to never see the light of day. I thought it’d be cool to share with you all.
Fair warning: I was trying to acquiesce to the website’s house style so its a little different to how I usually write. I hope that doesn’t ruffle too many feathers. Bon Appetit!
